The Four Concepts of Health

According to the World Health Organization, health is an individual’s ability to cope with the demands of everyday life. It encompasses physical, mental, and social aspects. Healthy living is a combination of behaviors, skills, and resources that allow an individual to maintain homeostasis and recover from adverse events. It also includes the social and emotional well-being of an individual. These are referred to as a person’s “well-being”.

Proper health concepts focus on people as a primary focus. Keleher and MacDougall (2003) argue that understanding people’s perspectives is a critical step in defining health. There are numerous studies that link health to wellbeing. In western cultures, health is often equated with disease and pathogens. Yet many of these same concepts have multiple dimensions, making it crucial to understand each one in its own right.

The four concepts of health include the physical, social, and psychological factors that influence an individual’s well-being. In the ancient Greek world, health was thought of as the absence of pathogens and diseases, whereas in other cultures it was viewed as the condition of being free of disease. This is the reason why it is important to understand the concept of health from a people’s perspective. There are many factors that influence a person’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

The four concepts of health are interrelated and overlap. The first concept is the concept of ‘complete health’. ‘Health’ is a state of complete wellbeing. This concept is unattainable, and even counterproductive since people will never reach this state of wellness. Further, it fails to take into account chronic illnesses and disabilities and contributes to the over-medicalisation of society. So how do we define health?

The fourth concept of health is the idea that all people have a similar amount of physical and mental health. But, the perception of ‘good health’ in the world is also a form of lifestyle. The same concept of health has four concepts. Some of them are influenced by cultural, economic, and socio-cultural factors. These four concepts are the basis of all human wellbeing. The concept of health in different cultures has been developed in various countries, but the definitions are the same.

The first concept is the most common, but it can be a little confusing. Despite the many theories of health, defining health is a complex process. The concept of health varies greatly depending on your background, education, and age. But regardless of the approach you take, there are some common elements. A proper definition of health can be a good place to start. The fourth concept is the most important one for us.
